Childhood Obesity - October 7, 2011 by Matt Meyers CPT

As Halloween approaches and the weather begins to cool off we will be able to enjoy working out outdoors once again.  We will also be able to allow our children to play outside without having to worry about the excessive heat.  With October being National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, we should encourage our children to become more active in turn developing into part of their daily activity.

In a recent study it showed that 12.5 million children and adolescents between the ages of 2 and 19 were considered obese.  With these kind of numbers it puts children are on a high-risk trajectory for coronary artery disease by their 30′s and 40′s, not to mention all of the other health risks like diabetes and certain types of cancers.  As parents we need to be concerned about these numbers and start encouraging activity.

What ever happened to kids playing outside?  Building forts, playing tag and being involved in other sports was a natural part of growing up.  The times have definitely changed and our children have been introduced to a society that has made things simpler on them reducing the necessary daily exercise.  We must also practice good eating habits and not allow our children to overeat or eat whatever they choose.

By making simple changes in our children’s life it will increase their life expectancy and reduce their chances of coming down with disease.  As parents we should start leading by example and teach our children that exercise and eating healthy is fun and not a chore.  We can also begin to encourage our children to play sports.  Furthermore, Ultima Fitness offers Tae Kwon Do to children which is one way for gym members and their children to become involved in exercise.  The time to make the change is now, no excuses. Let’s change our children’s future today!

The Benjamin Button Approach - September 22, 2011 by Matt Meyers CPT

In The Curious Case of Benjamin Button by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the character “Benjamin Button” ages in reverse, meaning as he gets older the younger he begins to look.  Although this may not happen in real life, it is possible to slow down the aging process through proper diet and exercise.  It has been proven that physical activity slows down the aging process and also improves overall well-being.

By maintaining physical our endurance, strength and flexibility through exercise, we will biologically be younger than sedentary individuals.  This means that your body will seem younger compared to someone the same age who is not exercising regularly.  The benefits of performing moderate physical activity at least six days a week can be great for people of all ages.

Some of the major benefits to performing physical activity consist of: reduced risk of heart disease, reduced risk for cancer, reduced risk for diabetes, build and maintain healthy bones, muscles and joints. Although these are only a few benefits of physical activity we can see how these things can affect our life and the people around us in a huge way.

Just as Benjamin Button, we are able to reverse the effects of aging creating a healthy and happy lifestyle at any age.  With all of the health benefits associated with exercise it is a wonder how people remain sedentary all their lives.  At Ultima Fitness we provide the tools for you to take the Benjamin Button approach and start reversing the aging process today.

Ultima Fitness Internship - August 25, 2011 by Matt Meyers CPT

With a dramatic increase in health and fitness jobs within the last couple of years, most degree programs are beginning to require their students to complete an internship in order to graduate.  Ultima Fitness and Xtreme Tae Kwon Do would like to welcome those students in gaining “real world” experience at our facility.  Our internship program offers opportunities where a student can experience all aspects of the health and fitness field including their very own special area of interest.

At Ultima Fitness in Wellington Florida, we have a 29,000 square foot facility that offers our interns a wide range of different encounters.  Our interns will have special training in fitness assessments, health consultation, equipment maintenance, health promotion, customer and membership services, special events planning and group exercise class instruction.  We will help to increase your knowledge, so when you are hired for a company you will have the experience to be a leader.

In the past, we have hired most of our interns, including myself, and from my experience it was nice to know that a job may be waiting once I graduated.   From being an intern at Ultima Fitness, I have learned about many different areas of the gym, not only what you see but also how to run and manage the gym.  Also, everyone at Ultima Fitness was helpful in guiding me in the right direction to achieve my personal goals.  The managers and owners were very good at placing me where they thought I would succeed the most and gave me great tips on how to improve.

An internship can be the experience of a lifetime; it can help to determine the type of career you would like for the rest of your life.  Since the health and fitness industry is growing at a rapid rate, recently graduated students will essentially be guaranteed a job. If the health and fitness field is something that really interests you and if you are someone who is goal oriented and self-motivated, we encourage you to apply for an Ultima Fitness internship.

The Element of Suprise - August 16, 2011 by Matt Meyers CPT

Can you remember when you first started working out and how sore you were after a workout? Or have you just started working out and are still sore from your last workout?  So why does this soreness end after we have worked out with “the same” routine over and over? It comes down to one simple equation.

What happens when a person keeps doing “the same” workout routine over and over is that the body gets accustomed to the movements of that workout.  When the body gets accustomed to a certain workout routine there will be little strength and muscle gains and it will be extremely hard to improve.  This is when you need to use The Element of Surprise to trick your body.

The Element of Surprise does not require one to totally change their routine, although at times it would not hurt.  It can be something as simple as changing the number of sets and repetitions per workout or switching to lighter weights with higher repetitions, rather than using the typical heavy weights and low repetitions.  Another nice Element of Surprise is to lift your typical set of heavy weights quickly followed by 20 repetitions of light weights; this will trigger both the “slow” and “fast” twitch muscle fibers.

These are only a few examples of how to incorporate The Element of Surprise into your workout routine.  It is now time to get creative while working out and start surprising your body and start being surprised with how your body looks.  I can’t wait to read your comments on how you added The Element of Surprise into your workouts today!

How Do You Measure Success? - August 3, 2011 by Matt Meyers CPT

How does one measure success? Is it by how much money you make? How much you have accomplished in your lifetime? How fast you can run a race? Or how much weight you can lift? Everyone seems to have a different definition for measuring success.  As Booker T. Washington once said “Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome. “

Yes, it is true that making a lot of money, having many accomplishments, running a race in record time and lifting hundreds of pounds are all wonderful accomplishments.  They indeed do require the passing of many obstacles to achieve a final goal.  But history proves the most successful people do not brag about how much money they have, or how good they are at something.  This is an obstacle that many people who want to successful may have yet to conquer, or may never conquer.

At Ultima Fitness we try to help all of our members to be as successful as they can be when it comes to fitness and becoming a healthier person.  We realize that there may be many obstacles in the way that are trying to prevent us from living a healthy lifestyle.  America is filled with fast food, television and unhealthy lifestyles, these are merely obstacles we must overcome to live the healthy life that we deserve.

There is much truth in what Booker T. Washington had to say.  No matter how high of a position a person may have reached in life, someone in a lower position who has overcome more obstacles can be just as successful.  It is also very possible for us to avoid the unhealthy lifestyles that are trying to lure us in, although these obstacles may seem tempting at times, we must stay strong and keep striving to succeed and achieve the success that we so desire.

What Could a Personal Trainer Do For Me? - July 28, 2011 by Matt Meyers CPT

Have you ever worked out at Ultima Fitness and not been motivated to push yourself?  or whether knowing it or not been using bad form?  Have you ever thought of finding a personal trainerPersonal trainers are experienced in motivational tactics, correct exercise posture and providing you with the best physical and mental results.  The most qualified personal trainers are typically certified by an organization that specializes in personal training, so rest assure your personal trainer knows what they are talking about.  If you’re still uncertain, ask for credentials.

Some days when we go to the gym we may seem to have no motivation or may just be feeling groggy, everyone has had that feeling before. This is where a personal trainer can help motivate us and push us to the limit.  By the use of motivational techniques it will keep you focused and determined to finish as many sets and repetitions that are required, this will produce better results and more satisfaction.  Also, by increasing your motivation and seeing results you will be more excited to go to the gym.  Just get used to your trainer saying “one more”!

Every day in the gym business we see people doing all sorts of different exercises, but what worries me the most is the number of people who simply do not know what they are doing.  When it comes to achieving your goals and earning the best results exercise technique is critical.  If you feel that your form needs a critique, this would be another time to consider purchasing a few personal training sessions.  Personal training can be thought of like any other sport, having a coach critiquing your form only makes you better, but most people do not think of this when it comes to exercising.  Once you have learned the proper technique to exercises the rest will be in your hands, but a personal trainer will always be available at Ultima Fitness

Paying extra hard earned money to hire a personal trainer may not be the first thing you want to do when you go to the gym.  But the rewards of having someone push you to complete a planned exercise schedule are phenomenal.  Whether it is weight loss, maintaining physical condition or just someone to work out with a personal trainer will be there to help.  Personal trainers are here because we know a lot about exercise, love helping people and teaching them the exercises we know.  If you ever need some more motivation or want the result you always wanted consider hiring a personal trainer at Ultima Fitness, we know what’s best.

Intimidated By The Gym? - July 22, 2011 by Matt Meyers CPT

Working as a personal trainer and negotiating gym memberships I have come across a number people that explain to me how they are nervous to join because they are intimidated by the gym.  I started to ask myself; what is it that’s so intimidating? Is it working out in an open space? Is it all of the fit people? Could it be what people think about me?  I know that these all may be concerns for some people, so I started to brainstorm ways to combat these fears.

When it comes to working out in a gym one can expect to work out in an open space, this may be intimidating to some people.  We realized this at Ultima Fitness and have created a Ladies Only Area. You can find our Ladies Only Area comfortably nestled in the back corner of Ultima Fitness.  It is loaded with dumbbells, weight machines, a treadmill, an ellyptical, mats, Swiss balls and more.  This is a great way for women to escape the clutter of the gym.

One thing you can expect to see at the gym is indeed fit people.  But don’t let them intimidate you, if anything use them to help you.  Most of the fit people in the gym have been working out for years and are probably open to helping and answering questions you may have. However, if you do have questions the best answer can be found by our personal trainers.  We are very knowledgeable in this field and it is our job to help you the customer to the best of our ability.

Lastly, if you are worried about what people think about you, realize that you are here for yourself and not to please anyone else.  You are in the gym working hard to improve your body and your health, which is what the gym is meant for.  You have the right to workout at Ultima Fitness just as much as the next person.  So stay positive and keep pushing toward your goals, you will reach them soon enough.

So now that you are not as intimidated by the gym anymore we hope to see you soon at Ultima Fitness.  However, if for some reason there are still some things holding you back please feel free to call and ask us for some advice.  We are here to help you at Ultima Fitness and we want to help you reach all of your fitness goals.  I can’t wait to see you here soon.
